The project will test the effectiveness of this solution in three situations of intercommunity conflict, respectively in Cyprus, Northern Ireland and Southern Italy (where the conflict involves friction between native and immigrant communities). RECORDINGS OF TRIALS MADE BY "ICR"

Name: Young people on the Interface

Story: An interface area, between a predominantly Protestant area and a predominantly Catholic area, has been heavily affected by the Troubles and for many years has effectively served as the boundary between the two communities. There have also been recent outbreaks of violence involving young people from the two communities. However, in this recent violence several young people were badly injured and this has led people in the two areas to begin to engage with the issue of young people and interface violence. Belfast City Council has recently announced that it would be interested in supporting a funding proposal for sports based regeneration of interface areas, provided that proposals have cross community support. There is a sizeable area of wasteland and a derelict building adjacent to the interface area, which could be developed for sports purposes, but some have argued that the land should be used for housing or employment instead.

General goals:

  • Engage with young people, to explore the reasons for the violence and try to identify a solution they will support
  • To gain support within own community for a regeneration project that will benefit young people.
  • To build cross community support for the project.
  • To present the ideas to the City Council and gain their support for the project
